The Maris Piper

Welcome to the Home Page of the Maris Piper. My name is Marinus Maris; I am the Maris Piper. Born in Aberdeen I grew up in the North East of Scotland and now live on Royal Deeside. As a child I was heavily influenced by the now disbanded Gordon Highlanders Regiment who I was taken regularly to watch. I am proud to wear the Gordon Tartan.

I began piping at the age of 8 at Lathallan School in Johnshaven which at the time had the only Junior marching Pipe Band in Europe. Under the excellent tutorship of Gordon Rogers — a retired Police Officer — I was appointed Pipe Major after 3 years. With the Band I regularly piped at Braemar, Aboyne, Drumtochty and the Ballater Games. The Band were regular visitors to Balmoral Castle, Scone Palace and Marischal College.

I won a Piping Scholarship to attend Merchiston Castle School for boys in Edinburgh and was invited in my first term to join the Senior Pipe Band of which the School had three. My Scolarship entitled me to personal training by Tom Spiers, an ex World Champion. Tom was suceeded by his own Son as World Champion whom he also taught. After two years in the Senior Pipe Band I was promoted to Pipe Major; a position I held for 3 years. I am the winner of the Lamie Cup for 4 years.

My piping has taken me to many overseas venues and to Beating the Retreat at Edinburgh Castle & Holyrood Palace.

I have had the privilege and honour of piping on the hallowed turf at Murrayfield on several occassions.

I am “Ready Ay Ready” to Pipe for all occassions. Bespoke Compositions composed.
